First and foremost, it’s the brides and grooms that our hearts go out to on days like this. They’re probably hoping and praying every day leading up to their big day for a beautiful clear sky (or at least snow, for a winter wedding).
On the “bright” side, there’s an old superstition that rain on your wedding day is a lucky omen. The Italians even have a saying for it, “Sposa bagnata, sposa fortunata,” meaning “A wet bride is a lucky bride.” Still, most brides would trade a little good fortune for a (dry) day of their dreams. But if you’re tying the knot in the UK, you sadly just can’t count on endless sunny skies.
Unfortunately we can’t change the weather, but what we can all do is EMBRACE it! Luckily, we are on hand to help with our top top tips for showery celebrations, complete with cute pics. So grab your wedding wellies and let’s beat this rain…
Our first tip may seem pretty obvious, but make sure you have plenty of sturdy umbrellas (not the kind that blow inside-out with a hint of wind) and arm your groomsmen and bridesmaids with them and ask them to accompany your guests from their cars to the venue. Umbrellas can make for some stunning photos! Match them with your wedding theme, or even have rainbow coloured brollies to brighten up the skies.
Be prepared. Buy yourself and your bridesmaids a pair of wedding wellies. You can’t go wrong with classic black ones birds that bring good luck, but it’s better to go with a colour that specifically matches your wedding theme. Not only will you be able to stomp around fields to find brilliant picture locations, you’ll also keep your wedding shoes pristine for the future.
Make sure that you can hitch your train up with a loop over your finger, or that your bridesmaids are well rehearsed in carrying it – you won’t want it ruined during your walk up to the church. Take a big white sheet to stand on on the grass, so that the bottom of your dress doesn’t get too filthy. But don’t worry, your dress can easily be dry cleaned after the wedding.
Ensure that sure you have the right type of flooring installed, or you could have a disaster on your hands! Ground water can seep through a marquee if you opt for cheap flooring options so make sure a good chunk of your budget it dedicated to this if you’re planning an outdoor reception.
It rarely rains all day, constantly. Keep checking what’s going on and ask your wedding venue’s coordinator if you can be flexible with the timings to make the most of the sunny spells.
Embrace the dark skies, some of the nicest photos are with atmospheric clouds and a good photographer will make the most of these shots!
Keep in mind, if a few days before the wedding, the forecast doesn’t look friendly – remember that the forecast has been wrong before. Don’t let the weather ‘experts’ dictate your wedding day. They’ve been wrong before and they’ll be wrong again!
If it does rain, it’s not the end of the world, many brides and grooms have embraced the rain by making it work for them. Say you “don’t care” and celebrate your wedding in the rain, with everyone else getting wet too!
